1969 Marshall small-box plexi 50w head
$9,500.00In stock
One of history’s finest-sounding amps. Black levant, small logo, label dated May 23, 1969, currently equipped with a pair of excellent “Winged C” EL34s. Caveat – the mains transformer appears to have been changed. The work is very clean, not at all obvious, and it’s a proper Drake unit but a bit newer – late ‘70s or early ‘80s. A few changed small parts but original filter caps, etc. Another item to note is that the amp is recovered only on one side (the side panel where the switches are.) The consigner is providing an original piece of period Marshall vinyl so that you can fix that it if you so choose. Small-box “plexis” are very rare on the US market. Marshall’s history begins with the tweed-era Fenders that were hard to find in the UK. Look at the controls on a tweed Bassman and the controls on early Marshalls and you’ll see the same layout. Marshall’s JMP-era model 1987 was built starting in 1967 with a plexiglass control panel until mid-1969, and by the fall of 1969 they had a metal control panel. To own a real vintage plexi is a privilege. Today Marshall is pushing “lifestyle” products with headphones, earbuds, boom boxes, and um…beverages. But in the 1960s many of our guitar heroes played Marshall. Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Townshend…Marshall, Marshall, Marshall. That’s why these command attention. Incredible bark and authority, extremely responsive, dynamic and bracing. Note the original solder joints with their factory red Testors paint that we highlight in the photos. Made in UK.
