1968 Gibson L-5 CES

Out of stock

VG++, natural. Very cool sharp Florentine cutaway with all solid-wood back and sides and a solid carved spruce top. This one is quite unusual as it appears to have a factory Byrdland tailpiece. No, really, see our photos, no other tailpiece has been on it. The standard L-5 tailpiece (with the top-break tension adjustment) has a much longer screw hole pattern.
This guitar has a lot of play wear with some dings and scratches you can see in the pictures but no cracks or breaks. However, it is a new fingerboard and fresh frets. The work is well-done with all the luxury binding you’d expect from this top-of-the-line guitar.
The electronics are original with beautiful-sounding “patent sticker” humbuckers on which the gold plating has worn away. Replaced pickguard (5-ply binding).
This guitar was used professionally and has a great warm sound that only old pickups and carved spruce can do.
Gibson does not currently make carved spruce archtops as they are painfully difficult to build. This one has real charm but is priced according to condition and replaced ebony fingerboard. Currently resides in a ’70s Gibson hard case.
