1964 Gibson Dove

VG++. There were only 748 pre-1965 Gibson Doves shipped in total, in sunburst and natural combined, and they were very expensive in the day. There were only 248 Gibson Doves made in natural in 1964. This one came from its original owner. The nickel Tune-o-Matic had flattened out so we got a repro and had it professionally cut for mounting with the adjustment screws in the original Brazilian rosewood bridge. It came to us with an ’80s pickup that we replaced with a simple Fishman transducer with battery preamp. Something simple but stageworthy. Gibson made these as accompaniment instruments for singers – that’s why the supremely tunable bridge. Ask Pete Townshend who claims the Tune-o-Matic on his ’60s J-200 is the secret sauce for recording. This Dove sounds great. Big pre-’65 1 & 11/16″, nut and beautifully round neck. Brazilian fretboard, original truss rod cover, and great-looking nickel waffle-back tuners. No breaks or cracks on neck. The pickguard and Brazilian bridge are original. The back and sides are solid highly-flamed maple (only the finest woods for the mighty Dove). The original Tune-o-Matic comes in the original hard case. We’ll let the photos detail the description but one repaired top crack at the edge of the trouble side top, a strap button added at the heel of the neck and a jack for the pickup added, otherwise it has some finish checking and the dings and scratches you see. The tone is rich and deep. Elvis, Tom Petty, Jim Croce, and Keith Richards all used Doves- there are some great Tom Petty videos with Tom and his Dove. These are really hard to find and yet easy to love.
