Archtop-Electric & Acoustic1969 Gretsch Van Epps 7 String

As the father of the 7 string guitar this was the first production seven string ever. This one has the preferred truss rod (headstock, not the Baldwin era heel adjustment). Van Epps played with Peggy Lee, Tony Bennet, Sarah Vaughn and others. Bucky Pizzarelli also used this model on the Johnny Carson era Tonight Show. This guitar strung with Pizzareli strings. This guitar has new binding (whew) and pickguard but original pickups and Grover tuners. Sounds deep and rich. Quite rare. Comes with the original grey deluxe hard case.

Fun Facts!
1. There were 2 models:
#6079 : Made in Brooklyn, Tuning fork , normal trussrod,
G-tailpiece and headstock tag engraved "Van Eps Model"
#6080 Made in Boone, AR. no tuning fork. no Van Eps endorsement or engraving,
Burns heelplate-adjuster truss rod
Van Eps himself, whose father was a famous banjo performer and had the Van Eps Banjo Co. just down the street in Brooklyn for about 10 years before these were made, worked in his father's factory doing frets, which were pushed in from the side like Fender did to prevent loose frets. The Gretch was only the second guitar he owned, the other being his beloved 30's noncut Epi Deluxe, which he had the Epi factory modify with a 7-string neck and adapted bridge and tailpiece.

Van Eps played the Gretsch exclusively until his passing in 1998. Bucky Pizzarelli and George Barnes also owned these and Pizzarelli played his on the Tonight Show
until the show moved to California in 1972.
