Acoustic Flat TopNew Martin Custom 00-18DB "MM"

Awhile back Doug and Molly had the great fortune to be able to spend a few days at the Martin Guitar Factory. If you haven't been, go. It's exhilarating to be so close to the fire. If you have taken the tour, then, you know...Starting in the receiving area seeing slabs and slabs of rough wood it is really cool. It looks so different "in the raw".

For Molly the real treat was spending time in the vault looking at woods, learning about the stories the grain tells you by its spacing. Feeling inspired she started picking out wood for this unique custom. She choose High Altitude Swiss Spruce. For guitar nerds, it was harvested from the north side of the mountains, wait for it...in the winter! Bam! This top really stood out to her not just because of the uniform lines but then there is a spot where the lines spread out briefly. What happened in those years? Was there a storm that knocked out the trees around this one? A landslide? But then, the grain tighten up again. Regrowth! This top has it's own stories to tell. High Altitude Spruce is incredibly resonant and responsive.

Here you see her picking out the back and sides, Sinker Mahogany. Logs so dense when they were being carried down rivers in Belize, they sunk. 100 Years Ago! It's impossible to get close to this old growth wood these days. She was drawn to the gorgeous almost 3 dimensional figuring in the piece. Defiantly rings out on the higher register.

They marry together so nicely on this 00 deep body (Molly's go to size for custom Martins). Short scale, 1 3/4" ebony nut (a nod to Molly's 1934 0-17). Satin finish on the back of the neck , string spacing at the bridge at 2 3/16 makes this comfortable for fingerpicking. With the ebony fingerboard with a modified V profile it's beefy enough for flat picking. The straight line ebony bridge with it's minimal footprint really lets the top vibrate more freely. Speaking of ebony note the Waverlys with black ebony knobs! How about it?

Tastefully adorned with minimal markings. Note the lack of pickgaurd. Again, all about letting that top sing!

Here it is, from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the river comes this 00 DB "MM", complete with it's stories, ready to help you find yours. List: $5899
